Steak and Lesbians, currently running at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe until the 20th August, follows best friends Stevie and River as they negotiate love and friendship while trying to cook the perfect steak dinner.
On a small set, the comforting slice of life show unfolds with two very well rounded characters, who are both based on lesbian stereotypes, but played in such a charming way that they feel real and raw all the same.
As they both talk about heartbreak and longing, exes and crushes, the audience gets a beautiful glimpse at a close friendship built on trust and love. The show leans into the lived experiences of lesbians while discussing a distinct lack of media representation. There’s a good dose of humour worked into the emotional show, keeping things light while illuminating heavier topics.
Acted extremely well, both Stevie and River are convincing, complimentary in their opposing personalities, familiar in their expressions and experiences. Their conversation flows naturally, giving the production an air of just watching friends as they share time together.
Steak and Lesbians is a comfort show, beautifully constructed and well thought out. There’s friendship, romance, humour, and food! What more could one want!
