Latch, currently running at the Courtyard Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe, has one more performance you can catch tonight. The show explores girlhood, adolescence, and friendship in an intimate three-hander.
While childhood friends Sienna, Minnie and Jess get ready for an unsupervised party at Minnie’s house, they share stories and recount experiences through games and idle chat. As the night goes on, and alcohol sneaked from parents’ liquor cabinets flows freely, the three teenagers become increasingly bolder and share their deepest and darkest thoughts.
This darkly comedic narrative feels very familiar, a kind of coming-of-age story of three adolescent girls sharing their worries, hopes, and dreams. There is a very natural flow to the conversation, though a little more rehearsal time would have definitely benefited the overall presentation. The usual chaos of slightly tipsy teenagers trying to hold on to a conversation is very compelling and there are many heartfelt moments that will feel familiar to viewers.
While there is a lot of humour and a whimsical touch in the show, darker topics are also touched on, giving Latch a raw and realistic edge illuminating the inner lives of teen girls trying to find their place in the world. And while there’s a lot of great content in this show that will keep audiences engaged throughout, it is missing a direction and conclusion at this time.
Comfortable and challenging at once, Latch is a great slice-of-life show that deserves more development and attention. I for one cannot wait to see how it grows into itself, much like the girls at the centre of the show.
