I’m a Philosopher! Why the Fuck am I Here? is currently running at The Cockpit Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe, with the last performance happening tomorrow, 15 August.
The show pits some of history’s greatest thinkers against each other in a reality show setting that gives the audience the chance to vote participants out of the show throughout. It’s a wild concept that could really work in theory. Can Jean-Jacques Rousseau find common ground with Ayn Rand?
On a stage dominated by a large backdrop showing a waterfall in a jungle, with just a few items of camping equipment strewn about, the contestants go to work discussing moral and political ideas, and how to best build a society, while engaging in challenges and for some mysterious reason, lip sync battles.
There’s a solid idea at the base of this show, but in its current iteration it seems to lack focus and direction. A lot of repeated jokes are flogged to death, and the constant stream of new contestants waters down the actual plot. I would love to see this show morph into one that actually gives the characters time to discuss their ideas and maybe work together on challenges. The lip syncing, while funny, feels like a gap filler that takes away so much time from proper character arcs and interesting discussions.
While the ending is extremely well done, and the audience interactions add a lot of fun to the show, it just felt unfinished and more than just a little chaotic. I will keep an eye on further development though as the potential is definitely there!
