Thelma & Louise, running at the Young Vic until the 24 October, is a roaring new musical based on the 1991 film of the same name. Life-long friends Thelma and Louise are off on a girls trip when an ill-fated encounter at a dive bar throws their lives into turmoil. Fiercely protective of each other, the two women spiral into a dangerous adventure.
The first thing audiences will notice is the gorgeous stage, decked out in 80s Americana. With an arcade carpet and wooden walls filled with street signs and adverts. It’s a stunning visual that suits this story perfectly, emulating the road trip aesthetic mixed together with dive bar vibes.
From the first moment, the music really hits the tone and character of the material, with rocking score that evokes the late 80s incredibly well, perfectly executed by a strong cast.
Every moment of this show is carefully curated to follow the plot of the film, creating a rich atmosphere filled with emotional depth and an overarching feeling of desperate freedom. The narrative is beautifully told, underlined with a beautiful score filled with thunderously passionate songs.
A gorgeous movie-musical that carries the character of its source material perfectly.
