The Cannoneer, currently running at the Barons Court Theatre until the 17 October, tells the story of Guiseppa Bolognara Calcagno, a Sicilian orphan who was instrumental in the Italian unification of 1860, but often omitted from the history books.
Written and performed by Silvia Manazzone, the show blends history and entertainment, weaving audience participation into the first person narrative of a woman forgotten by history. Presenting a dynamic and high octane romp through history, The Cannoneer is a well rounded show that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Elements of clowning are highlighted with an extraordinary lighting design, and the passion for telling stories is palpable through the energetic performance.
Manazzone manages to weave information about the three revolutions that lead to the Italian unification throughout the show, making sure the audience is on equal footing, while maintaining a humorous tone that keeps it light despite the subject matter. With clever sidebars and a fountain of devotion, the picture of a fascinating woman comes into focus.
The story of Peppa the Cannoneer is a fascinating one, and this show tells it with passion and intensity. A gorgeous history and entertainment blend that lands a punch!
