I’d Kill For This Place, written by Laura Berni, is finishing its Camden Fringe run at the Etcetera Theatre today. The supernatural comedy takes on the housing crisis with a funny twist.
Four friends are looking for an affordable flat in London. But when one of them arrives to their viewing with a cooler full of blood and a secret that shakes the group to their core, things go off the rails. Is the housing crisis so bad that they are willing to live with a vampire?
This show blends Gen Z’s obsession with vampires with the struggles of young people finding affordable housing in London. There’s a lot of observational and situational humour throughout, with four very different personalities trying to make it work in a world that doesn’t seem built for them.
The fact that one of them recently became a vampire who struggles with the idea of actually drinking human blood adds tension while driving the narrative. What are these broke young people willing to put up with to secure housing they can actually afford?
While there is a lot of entertainment and amusement throughout the show, its characters do feel a little one-sided and could do with some more development. The very sparse set doesn’t help here either, though the actors make the most of it!
It’s a very funny and relatable show that feels like it could grow into something more significant with a little more time and development!
