Downward Spiral: The Benji’s Mind Show, currently running as part of the Camden Fringe with two more shows at the Rosemary Branch coming up on 20 and 21 August, is a wild solo comedy dealing with mental health and existential dread through a young perspective.
Benji’s mind is hosting a talk show every night, interviewing illustrious guests such as Shame, Authority Figure, and even Cheesy Bread. With plenty of humour, the surreal cast of characters torments Benji while he struggles to keep his life together and develop a sense of identity.
The one-hander is a whirlwind of jokes, gags, and physical comedy that keep a light note to the very dark topics explored throughout. Felix Jakob Mangold takes the audience on a journey through a young man’s psyche, with a lot of energy and a good dose of juvenile humour.
Through the medium of a talk show, complex topics are explored without holding anything back. There is a lot of darkness hidden behind the laughs, directly addressed at times and occasionally a little too uncomfortable. Though I may just be a little too old to fit the target audience of this show at this point.
Mangold has created a witty and fast paced examination of a troubled mind, distressing and entertaining all at once, while serving as a vehicle for deeper talk on mental health topics that are often difficult to open up about. A forceful performance full of heart and energy. Some of the manically neurotic characters in the show land better than others, feeling more rounded and thought out, while others are a little underdeveloped and tropey at times.
Still, there’s a lot of heart and honesty at the centre of Downward Spiral, a show that speaks to young men specifically. The idea behind the show is brilliant and deserves some more development and refinement to perhaps appeal to a wider audience.
