Tape, running at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe until the 15 August, is a dark, dynamic play examining memory vs truth through a very interesting lens.
Three high school friend reunite after a decade, but as old memories are examined from different angles, loyalties fracture and power struggles rise to the surface.
On a simple set representing a motel room somewhere in the US, a story of secrets and fraught memories unfolds with rapid fire conversation.
This one’s a very compelling piece of storytelling that leaves audiences with more questions than it answers. As the narrative is slowly revealed, it uncovers the human dilemma of recall differing greatly by individual, any situation existing in a thousand different perspectives that vary from person to person. There is very clever storytelling involved that takes the audience on a wild journey, believing they finally uncovered the truth before another plot twist arrives.
Through witty dialogue and a good dose of humour, the story unfolds bit by bit with many twists and turns, keeping an electric atmosphere sizzling throughout. Beautifully written and expertly presented, it’s a turbulent journey through human connection, loyalties, friendship, and possessiveness. A great piece of writing that will divide audiences on their own loyalties and whose truth they believe.
