Syncing, staged at the Lion & Unicorn Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe, is a fast paced parody, written by Lauren Bray, looking at a boy band in distress. It is 2002, Justin Timberlake has just left NSYNC, leaving the rest of the boys adrift and unsure of their future. In a green room somewhere before a concert, Lance, Joey, JC, and Chris must figure out who they are without JT, and who they want to become.
This parody really needs nothing but its four highly energetic performers, clad in shiny silver garments. It’s a wild ride through the psyche of the less popular boy band members at the precipice of their future.
From dance performances and trying out a variety of different genres for their music, to full mental breakdowns that lead to new revelations about their ambitions and dreams, the boys are really put through the wringer. Ridiculously silly from start to finish, it’s a nostalgic journey with many hilarious surprises in store.
The show could benefit from a bit more structure, perhaps. Though the chaotic energy is definitely part of its charm. If you’re looking for a riotous hour of unhinged comedy, this one’s for you!
