Murder On The Allotment is a brand new musical staged as part of the Camden Fringe, running at The Cockpit for two nights only. The show is inspired by real-life stories from teenage asylum seekers.
17yr old asylum seeker Karwan has been handed a small plot at an allotment somewhere in a small town in middle England. Populated with mostly “boring old age pensioners”, he’s faced with judgment and a simmering turf war, but also surprising connections that run deeper than expected.
The musical is very well presented, but feels a little rushed. At only an hour run time, there is so much plot squished into it, it doesn’t leave much breathing room for character development and slowly building plot arcs. Of course, this is something that plagues many fringe shows in the early stages of their development.
That being said, it’s a really well written musical with a varied, fun selection of songs that range from deeply emotional to absolutely hilarious. There’s plenty of humour inserted into this story of finding belonging and overcoming adversity. The tone shifts throughout the narrative, uncovering a depth of understanding that could fill a much longer runtime with ease.
I would love to see this one developed into a full length production, there is so much potential in the narrative as well as the fantastic songs. It just feels a bit rushed and underdeveloped in its 1hr format as the story feels bigger than it is currently given space for. This one’s definitely going on my list of shows to watch as they grow and unfold their full potential through their developmental journey, a fantastic start to something that could become tremendous!
