Bluebells Grow In Whitechapel is a new musical in development by 1810 Productions that has seen a few concert stagings in the past few months. The project looks at the Canonical Five, the women who were murdered by Jack The Ripper, while managing to not mention him even in passing, rather focussing on the lives they led before their brutal deaths.
The five women wake in limbo, beginning to relive fragments of their past that led them to their respective ends. Through interwoven scenes, full stories and personalities are uncovered and developed, painting an incredibly vibrant picture of five fascinating lives with all their ups and downs.
Through extensive research, the writers have retraced the women’s lives without the prejudice often present in stories about them or their killer. Having completely removed the latter from the story allows the audience to get to know their characters, understand their decisions, and develop empathy for their struggles. Giving power back to the women at the heart of the story, rather than allowing them to be a small anecdote, a spectacle to be sensationalised. There is so much heart and love in the writing, uncovering a wide range of different lives women in the late 1800s may have lived.
Punctuated and intensified with incredibly emotional songs, ranging from heartbreaking ballads to rousing rock songs, the soundtrack really drives home the depths of love and despair in these women’s lives. With astonishing vocal talent, these songs leave a lasting impression on a deeply touched audience.
It is very refreshing to see women at the forefront of the story, their lives examined with a gentle hand and presented with so much compassion and care. While there is no full staging developed quite yet, I for one cannot wait to see how this show grows and evolves in the future. It feels like an absolute masterpiece in the making!
