The Missing Eyes just finished a short run at the Hen & Chickens Theatre ahead of its Camden Fringe run at the Courtyard Theatre.
A gruesome murder, a suspect, a witness, two detectives at odds. In the aftermath of a violent death, the suspect and witness are interrogated, motives and timelines questioned, while tensions run high between authorities and theories unravel rapidly.
The show is a mix of physical theatre and narrative. Extended moments of dance and movement draw focus away from the story that’s presented in between, giving a rather ethereal feel to the production. There are glimpses of a fascinating story beneath the layers, a little disconnected and hard to grasp.
Indulging in a cliched good cop, bad cop routine doesn’t help the storytelling either, making it feel a bit contrived and unbalanced. A lot of shouting and confrontation unfortunately overshadows the dramatic arc, while the physical theatre elements don’t aid in building tension either.
Underneath it all there is a very interesting story that could definitely be developed, and perhaps extended in length, with less distracting elements and more focus on the story, as well as more rounded characters, this could be quite a fascinating show!
