Pews at Ten just had their Edinburgh previews at The Hope Theatre in London. The hilariously heart-warming show is definitely one to watch, add it to your Fringe list if you’re heading to Edinburgh!
St David’s, the smallest city in Britain, is a quiet community in Wales. Three old ladies take their regular seats in the front pew of St David’s Cathedral to gossip before the service. Their regular routine is disrupted when English transplant David joins the church, and it is announced that an international pop star will visit their little cathedral. With just a couple days to prepare, all hell breaks loose!
For a fringe show, the set is incredibly well done, with actual pews and a town notice board in pride of place, giving a homey community feel to the stage. With a fast-paced plot, Pews at Ten entertains relentlessly! The small town feel of gossiping grannies is comedic gold, especially when the three women lament how difficult a “southern English” accent is to understand, while firing Welsh at poor, flustered David.
The familiar feel of the bickering grannies intensifies the hilarious shenanigans they get up to in the name of a heart throb celebrity. Combined with David’s struggle to be accepted in the Welsh community there’s a lot of depth and warmth to this fast-paced comedy. This is not just a funny comfort show, it’s surprisingly action packed! With a lot of heart, this laugh-out-loud production is definitely a winner!
