The Truth, currently running at the Apollo Theatre until 12 September, is a modern relationship farce that delivers an hour and a half of laugh-out-loud moments.
Two married couples, best friends for decades, are thrown into turmoil when a secret affair is uncovered and loyalties are tested.
While this play may not be heavy on plot, it certainly makes up for that with a relentless barrage of comedy. From the first scene to the last, humour is at the forefront, entertaining effortlessly with a series of misunderstandings and secrets, mind games and deceptions. There isn’t a dull moment in sight throughout.
The stage design is beautifully realised, sliding elements completely transforming the different locations with detailed sets and lighting changes. There is a retro vibe to the visual design, giving a comfortable, familiar feel to the show.
As much as the play relies on comedy driven twists and surprises, there isn’t too much plot hidden behind the assault of situational comedy. There is no deep plot to be found here, no narrative to advance, no character development. However, if you’re in the mood for a good laugh, this is definitely the show for you. A great comedy that uses its tropes to the fullest extent to entertain.
