The Extraordinary Life of a Rat Racer is currently running at the Barons Court Theatre until 4 July. The play revolves around Eva, a stressed and tired single mother struggling to get by in London. While on her way to a job interview, she is overcome with a barrage of intrusive thoughts in the form of Arthur, a relentlessly sadistic personification of her trauma.
The stage is peppered with balloons of many colours, utilised as props, stand-ins for other people, and to be burst at strategic moments to set the audience on edge. It’s a tense narrative that is filled with surprising amounts of humour, often darkly so. Eva feels familiar as a character, an everyday woman just trying to make it in a busy world full of pressure. Her intrusive thoughts are violent and distressing, something the voice in her head, Arthur, absolutely revels in. As the story unravels, the audience learns about her life, her past, her dreams, and her ambitions.
The tension is beautifully built throughout, with glimpses at the past interspersed with current happenings, all engulfed in the endless stream of violent intrusions from Arthur. There is a lot to relate to in this story, and the presentation is full of whimsy despite its dark nature. The show manages to utilise fourth wall breaks to fully immerse the audience in the distressing brain of a young woman struggling to manage her trauma while just making it through the day. A beautifully tense narrative, presented with immensely creative fervor, a twisted joy to watch!
