It is finally Showtime in the West End! The hotly anticipated Beetlejuice musical made it across the pond, now playing at the Prince Edward Theatre, running until 17 April 2027.
The beloved Tim Burton film from the 80s became a cult classic with staying power, and it is finally a stage musical in all its black and white striped glory. When the Maitlands unexpectedly die in their house, filthy but charming demon Beetlejuice plans to use them to get a living person to speak his name three times, finally bringing him back to the world of the living. The house is bought by Charles Deetz, his strange and unusual teenage daughter Lydia Deetz, and Lydia’s life coach Delia. Lydia grieves the recent death of her mother, which Beetljuice quickly uses as his way in. Absolute otherworldly (netherworldly?) chaos ensues.
The plot of the stage show is slightly altered from the film, making it a simpler and more modernised narrative that doesn’t need a lot of exposition to explain. The main focus still lies on Lydia’s grief and her father’s refusal to acknowledge any emotions at all. Beetlejuice himself is perhaps a little less charming than his on-screen variant, but a whole lot more naughty and hilarious. Full of pizazz and dramatic antics, the demonic ghost with the most dominates the stage with ease, spreading his banter and sidebars to the audience in a constant fourth-wall-breaking frenzy that is to die for.
The sets are incredibly whimsical, sticking to the aesthetic of the source material while giving it a theatrical update that is reminiscent of comic-book panels, zooming in and out of certain parts of the house that all look slightly off kilter and distorted in the most delightfully strange way. There’s nods to classic theatre with heavy curtains obstructing the stage for scene changes while the cast reprise songs at the stage’s edge, which adds a very charming touch to the performance.
The songs themselves are fun, modern, and have a good variety that see their biggest highlights in the second act. Overall, a musical worthy of its name, don’t hesitate to book your tickets thrice!
