I Made You A Mixtape, a dance based love letter to 90s girl power culture by Response Theatre Company, is currently running at the Cockpit theatre until 14 July.
Nine girls are having a party in their college dorm, with the greatest hits of the 90s blasting, they play party games, record each other with a camcorder, hang out, and most of all, dance their hearts out. With each new song comes a new confession from one of the girls in the group, creating an emotional narrative that changes with each and every performance.
There is no spoken text in this production, the narrative is communicated purely through movement and dance, with a loud 90s rock and alternative soundtrack setting the pace. Large poster boards give the dancers some direction of what their character is experiencing emotionally, adding more depth to the performance. The stage is mostly bare to allow space to dance, with some 90s party themed stage dressing brought in and moved around throughout, though the focus stays firmly on the physical exploration of music, movement, and emotion that is at the heart of this show.
Creating a sizzling atmosphere that draws the audience in from the first beat to the last, Mixtape is a radiant affirmation of life, bursting with passion and energy. With creative choreographies flowing into free-form movement and modern dance that suits the decade it depicts very well, it is a joy to watch the ceaseless vitality simmer over.
The narrative itself feels a little too loose, too experimental, to have a deeper impact, but the dance performance itself more than makes up for it. With a little more direction and perhaps a clearer narrative that suits the chosen songs better, this could definitely become a wildly successful production. It already has all the nostalgia and intensity Millennial women could every wish for!
