Redcliffe, currently running at the Southwark Playhouse Borough until 4 July, is the debut musical written and performed by Jordan Luke Gage. The long awaited premiere of the fully staged show is set in 1752 and tells a fictionalised version of the true story of William Critchard and Richard Arnold, two men executed for being gay. Sexual activity between men was punishable by death until 1861, and remained illegal in England for another century.
Young William has lived a quiet life in Redcliffe, Bristol, desperately trying to hide his homosexuality from his family. But when charming sailor Richard visits the small town, William is swept away in a passionate love affair. With far-reaching consequences for William and his family, a fight for his life ensues.
The storytelling in this musical is tender and beautifully constructed, slowly building well rounded characters that populate the stage. There’s a sense of yearning woven throughout the story, overlaying the more obvious story of two gay men in love with complex emotional narratives. The perspectives of all people involved are examined deeply and given exposure, bringing depth and balance to this touching musical.
With a powerhouse cast throughout, and a stunning score, the audience cannot help but feel profoundly connected to the characters. The vocal work of every single cast member is absolutely remarkable, belting their way into hearts and minds through the magic of beautifully written songs.
The set is simple yet effective, evoking the seaside location through rustic wooden floors and cargo crates, with a mostly blue lighting scheme and a gorgeous soundscape accompanying the action. Costume design utilises texture imprint methods to create an ethereal look throughout, evoking ghost-like visuals that suit the story incredibly well. Every detail of the staging feels thoroughly thought out and beautifully themed through, leading to a stunning staged musical full of emotion.
Redcliffe tells an incredibly important story, told with empathy and compassion, creating a spectacular musical that is as current and timely as it is tragically devastating. An absolute must see!
