The UK premiere of Stage Kiss, currently running at the Hampstead Theatre until 13 June, is a fresh romantic comedy that revolves around stage acting, creating a self-referential atmosphere on the stage itself.
During rehearsals for melodrama “The Last Kiss”, in which a terminally ill woman rekindles her romance with her first love, the company is surprised when it turns out the two leading actors have a whirlwind history of their own. Will they stay professional, or will their repeated stage kisses rekindle emotions that used to run deep?
Stage Kiss is a very interesting production, as much of it takes place during rehearsals for stage shows, bringing an odd mirror effect atmosphere to the auditorium. Starting the show with the house lights fully on as the casting unfolds on stage is an interesting choice that gives the audience an intimate view of the character’s first steps. Later, seeing the rehearsal move from sitzprobe to dress rehearsal with various semi-furnished steps in between is a delightful choice that really settles viewers into the storyline, accompanying the two leads on their journey from casting to opening night and beyond.
There is a very intimate and personal feel about this show, allowing a deeper connection with its characters and their chaotic decisions. It’s all a bit kitsch and a bit predictable, but there’s a whole lot of fun to be had on the way. The comedy part of romcom is the heaviest focus in this production, leading to a hilarious show that flies by and effortlessly entertains its audience.
One of my favourite genres is great actors playing bad actors, a feedback loop that really shows off their talent on a whole new level. In this vein, James Phoon delivers an outstanding performance in several side-character roles, effortlessly switching between different levels of acting ability, which is a honed craft that few can conjure to this level of expertise.
Overall, Stage Kiss is a whirlwind romcom that brings the stage to the stage with heaps of humour and romance.
