Escape London has many locations across the Greater London area, with different rooms scattered throughout them. The Hammersmith location, which also houses an axe throwing venue, boasts two rooms, Things Are Strange and Young Wednesday. I tackled both of them on a rainy Saturday with a team of 5 players. This review will be spoiler-free and only touch on the main themes and functions within the rooms.
Our host Nathan was absolutely fantastic, making our experience extremely enjoyable and just overall being a ray of sunshine and humour. A great GM definitely makes a difference to the escape experience!
Things Are Strange is of course inspired by the Netflix series, properly paying homage to its inspiration material by fully decking the rooms out in familiar visuals. From the twinkling Christmas lights to familiar scientific venues, it’s a delight for any fan.
I’m not sure I’d agree with the 5/5 difficulty rating, as there isn’t quite enough meat to the story to justify it. However, this doesn’t mean it isn’t a ton of fun to play. There are plenty of puzzles to tackle, a storyline throughout, references to delight fans, and spooky creepiness to indulge in.
A thoroughly themed room is always a delight to play, and while the puzzles weren’t as difficult as one might have hoped, they kept us entertained. We ended up setting a new high score at 32 minutes flat to escape!
A very fun room that is definitely worth a visit!
