Sorry (I broke your arms and legs), currently playing at the Pleasance Theatre as part of a double bill until Saturday, 9 May, is a brilliantly funny pre-teen drama told through the medium of a PowerPoint presentation.
Sam Wilson, 8C, is an awkward nerd who has his eye on becoming head boy, but he has competition for the prestigious position. Blind with ambition, Sam embarks on a quest to show faculty that he is the obvious right choice, but at what cost?
Who knew what theatre really needed was a PowerPoint presentation on the definition of a perfect apology. Sam has come to his classmate’s hospital room to apologise for breaking their arms and legs, but first he needs to give the audience context for the situation.
The production is hilariously chaotic, with the protagonist jumping from scene to scene to give context, return to previous scenes, jump further into the past, and occasionally into the future. It may sound like pandemonium, but it works extremely well, constructing a riotously funny narrative that is full of cliches, insecurities, and a steadfast knowledge of how the world works from the perspective of a twelve year old nerdy boy. The fast paced farce keeps surprising its audience with ever more bizarre scenarios, presented in an expertly awkward fashion with unpredictable plot twists, and through stunning PowerPoint graphic effects.
An incandescently comical show that doesn’t take itself too serious and isn’t afraid to go for the cheap shots. Incredibly funny, amazingly entertaining, and an absolute delight to witness.
