Please Don’t Fall In Love With Me (it’s really not sexy when that happens), a mouthful of a title, recently had a short run at the Hope Theatre.
2007, the naughtiest knicker shop in in Soho, a young woman has decided to live life like a man. High confidence and no emotional responsibilities, she aims to take advantage of her most valuable currency, sex appeal. In a shop filled with juicy secrets and naughty customers, she boldly dances through challenges and entertaining mishaps.
The show has an intriguing premise and promises to examine the cost of working in a highly sexualised industry, unfortunately it never quite delivers on the deeper exploration of the subject. Rather, it is presented as a series of sketches revolving around the customers and workers at the sexy lingerie shop. Hilarious and scandalous, but lacking real depth. There are glimpses of the inner world of the agents working at Knickers Forever, emotional turmoil and soul-searching are touched upon, though never fully expanded, leaving the audience to yearn for a real direction and conclusion.
Mollie Blue, writer and lead actor, has created a rich world of naughty secrets and a woman adrift in a world that has left her unfulfilled, aimless. The series of laugh-out-loud funny moments with customers and co-workers is extremely entertaining, if heavily over-acted. What is missing from the show though is a consistent through-line, character development, and a defined objective. There is potential in this slice-of-life narrative, and I look forward to seeing it develop further in the future. As it currently stands, it’s a funny sketch-show that delights with sharp humour and intelligent social observations, which will hopefully evolve into a stronger narrative examining the main character’s emotional world with a richer storyline pulling everything together.
