Deep Azure, a play by the late Chadwick Boseman, is currently being staged at the candle-lit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe Theatre until 2 May. Written in lyrical verse, it blends hip-hop and gospel elements to tell the story of Azure, a young Black woman with an eating disorder, and her journey of grief after the murder of her boyfriend Deep. At an almost 3 hr runtime, it’s a very moving production that focuses on the lived experience of Black Americans, picking up topics of racism, violence, generational trauma, and spirituality.
The intimate atmosphere of the Playhouse is a perfect setting for this emotionally charged narrative, drawing the audience in from the first breath. The MCs Street Knowledge and a chorus of beat-boxing dancers lead through the story, creating a pumping ambience that is elevated by the rhyming verse style of the production.
Costuming is stunningly gorgeous, with rich, futuristic designs reflecting with metallic fabrics, the MCs and chorus seem like an otherworldly presence, later changing into more earthy garbs reminding of African traditional garments. The entire show is underlined with beat-boxing and gospel choruses, an incredible energy matching the narrative beautifully, while the lyrical text reminds of Shakespearean drama. From the first moment to the last beat, it’s an electric experience, deeply moving and utterly gorgeous.
Deep Azure touches on some very dark and difficult topics, but manages to wrap them in exquisitely written verse, leading the audience through a storm of grief, anger, helplessness, and self harm. The utter beauty of the language used is stunning, a modern narrative elevated by its lyricism and powerful presentation, creating a theatrical experience of the highest quality.
The thorough theming inside the small theatre is wholly immersive, from the aisle curtains replaced by life-size prints of prominent Black artists, including Boseman himself, the ceiling painting amended to feature Black people, and the gorgeous stage design with huge futuristic baubles forming a huge caterpillar snaking up to the sky light, which becomes relevant in the story itself. Deep Azure is a stunningly beautiful production, an absolute triumph of writing, design, and performance. Perhaps the most moving and contemporarily relevant show of the year.
