Another treat for fans of horror entertainment has hit the West End, Paranormal Activity Live is currently playing at the Ambassadors Theatre until 25 April. Extending the franchise with a new story crafted specifically for the stage, audiences are in for a terrifying evening.
Young power couple James and Lou have moved from Chicago to London to have a fresh start, hoping to escape the spooky happenings recently befalling Lou. But they soon find out that they cannot outrun what is intrinsically tied to them. Places aren’t haunted, people are…
The set is spread out over two levels, an open concept kitchen and sitting room downstairs, bathroom, bedroom, and spare room upstairs. The Ambassadors Theatre has a few seats that restrict the view of the full stage due to circle overhang and steep angles, but rest assured, if you’re looking to score cheaper seats, you won’t be missing pivotal parts of the show, just a bit of flavour here and there. The pivotal plot is happening in full view of the entire audience. I’d still personally recommend the circle over very back of the stalls.
The story is crafted beautifully for the stage, utilising extended moments of complete darkness filled with droning noise to heighten the mood and tension. Jump scares hit perfectly as they’re not overused and only spring up out of the context created in the show. And while the narrative is a little slow to reveal itself, there are plenty of tense and terrifying interludes to keep the audience engaged.
It is a pity that the acting is a little lacklustre at times, never fully realising the characters as fully rounded, believable people. There is definitely room for improvement here, but overall it’s a delightful scary tale that beats any of the Paranormal Activity sequels in quality and entertainment value with ease. Truly chilling, filled with eerie effects, and stuffed full of delightful little details that re-emphasise how truly fun a terrifying piece of theatre can be! A delight for lovers of horror theatre.
