Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo is currently running at the Young Vic theatre until 31 January. Not a light-hearted holiday story, but a dark and challenging look at the Iraq war. Long after American forces have toppled Saddam Hussein, Baghdad remains a battle ground. In the midst of the chaos, a Tiger dies in the zoo, shot by a frightened soldier. But rather than just being dead, the tiger finds himself walking through the rubble, haunting his killer and pondering the meaning of life. American Marines Tom and Kev try to make it through their deployment, while translator Musa is haunted by his own past and the destruction of the war.
The show starts in complete darkness, with George W. Bush’s speech commencing the war plays in the background. A very dark start to an exceedingly dark plot that concerns itself with faith, philosophy, the emotional toll of being in an active war zone, and the human cost on all sides of the conflict. This is not easy watching or light entertainment, but rather a challenging and intense examination of the human condition.
There is some mild humour to break up the harsh tone of the production, especially with an atheist tiger struggling to come to terms with sudden religious belief in the face of an unexpected afterlife, though this is overshadowed by the plot lines concerning mental health and emotional devastation. The impact of the war on all of its victims, be it military, civilian, or animal, is vividly illustrated in this bleak plot, hitting hard while weaving a compelling story.
This production is tense and challenging, an important exploration of guilt, grief, belief, and forgiveness. Peppered with fascinating juxtapositions and a plethora of deep desolation of the soul, this is a show that will not be easily forgotten.
