The Meat Kings (Inc.) of Brooklyn Heights, currently running at the Park Theatre until 29 November, examines American immigration policies and sacrifices made in the name of a pursuit of financial stability, a broken American dream in a struggling economy.
New summer hire T joins the cutters at Cafarelli & Sons, a long-standing New York butcher with a strong family history. Carving and preparing meats for sale is not an easy job, especially in a company that predominantly hires ex-cons in the hope to give them a better future. Boss Paula works hard to keep the crumbling business going, but with the lowest sales on Independence Day in the shop’s history, she has to make the difficult decision of letting one of her staff go. Established butcher David and newcomer T have to decide their allegiances when apprentices Billy and JD go head to head in the race of winning the one junior cutter position on offer.
The show is quite slow to start, establishing personal histories and relationships between the characters, but once it gets going, it’s a powder keg of political drama, betrayal, and the struggle to survive. A Dreamer, an unreformed criminal, a young woman wanting to forge a better future, a ruthless manipulator, and a business woman with a soft heart but strong morals go head to head, discovering where their true loyalties lie and how far they will go to protect themselves.
Meat Kings brilliantly explores the cut-throat nature of disenfranchised people brought to the brink, finding their own reasons and explanations for their behaviours, trying to hold on to their dreams on their own and within a small community. There is so much struggle and despair to discover in this show, gently carved out of scenes within the cutting room of a small butcher shop. It’s an unusual setting for a play, but one that works incredibly well for this sharp tale of betrayal and unusual alliances. In a country that sees so many people struggle for basic survival, the stakes are high while tension boils over.
The strong characterisations of each player on the stage creates a slice of life that surprises with fluctuating entanglements, drawing up real-life personalities that feel tangible and familiar. The cutting room is brought to life with chunks of fake meat, unsettlingly real, though interestingly, the strongest reactions stem from the lack of consideration for basic hygiene measures among the staff. While they are all wearing gloves, they constantly cross-contaminate by touching the jelly-meat, then directly grabbing a snack, each other, their own faces, leading to unexpectedly visceral reactions in the audience, perhaps showing how real to life the setting is in its presentation.
A whirlwind of emotions, Meat Kings is an urgent, current exploration of tensions in the face of a tumultuous economy, fuelled by imbalanced immigration policies, high medical costs, and the struggle to rebuild a life in a society stacked against those convicted of crimes, no matter how petty.
