It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed an escape game, but I recently finally brought Adventure Games’ The Grand Hotel Abaddon to the table. With two friends, we chose three of the four characters and dove right into the narrative.
Adventure Games work a little like RPGs without a GM, where you start with one room card and work your way through to uncover more and more of the story. In this case, we are guests in a supposedly haunted hotel, each with their own reason for being there. Working collaboratively to solve the mystery of the hotel while also working on our own personal missions, each player takes turns to examine or combine objects, talk to NPCs, and discover new rooms and locations.
I’ve enjoyed previous Adventure Games I have played, they always have an intriguing narrative with interesting things to discover. This one doesn’t have as many choices that change the story as other games, but it still has plenty of secrets to uncover.
I would say it’s a lower difficulty rating with less replayability. Still, we very much enjoyed roaming around the haunted, art deco hotel, meeting plenty of interesting characters and discovering the dark secrets hiding around every corner.
With a very easy to understand game mechanic, and a fantastic companion app, it’s a delight to play and brings hours of joy to the table. It comes in three chapters and progress can be saved before starting a new chapter easily, though we played it through in one, taking about five hours start to finish. It’s definitely another triumph for Kosmos games and a really fun addition to a good games day. Playable solo or with up to 4 players, it’s flexible and gives you a good 4 to 5 hours of play time, which is quite economical considering the low price of the game. Definitely enjoyed playing this one and will try to get more of these kinds of games to the table as I still have a few sitting unplayed.
