Theatre Royal Bath’s production of Robert Bolt’s classic A Man For All Seasons, starring Martin Shaw, had a recent run in London’s Harold Pinter theatre. The story revolves around Sir Thomas More, scholar, ambassador, Lord Chancellor, friend to King Henry VIII, and staunch Catholic, When King Henry demands a divorce from Catherine to clear the way for him to marry Anne Boleyn, More has to decide between his loyalty to the king or his faith. His refusal to accept Henry as supreme head of the Church of England ultimately costs him everything.
While the production shines with gorgeous costumes, inventive set design, and spirited performances, it is hindered by its subject matter. There are interesting scenes, and utilizing one of More’s servants as a sort of narrator to describe settings and introduce people definitely helps relieve the dryness of the narrative. Overall, it’s just a bit of a bland production that’s perfectly fine, but doesn’t really engage or challenge the audience.
