An Invisible Mission, recently staged at the Camden Fringe, is a mix of mime and foley that aims to bring a riveting espionage story to the stage. ICA Theatre present a truly unique blend to the fringe, with a live foley artist crafting a soundtrack for the physical theatre unfolding in front of the audience.
The story tells of a newly minted spy receiving their first mission, and proceeding through increasingly more dramatic adventures, inter-spliced with personal tidbits telling of a life filled with secrets and deception. It’s a very imaginative show that requires the audience to fill in a lot of the action in their own minds. Aided by live foley effects and some recorded voice-overs, there is a thrilling narrative in there, though it doesn’t always quite translate perfectly, leading to the occasional moment of confusion. The vast majority of the physical adventures of our spy is very well represented and dynamically presented with no props or costumes, no scenery but a whole lot of imagination.
Some of the voice-overs do feel a little jarring in an otherwise wordless show, perhaps a pivot towards a more refined narrative that relies solely on mime and foley would feel more cohesive and refined.
Still, it is an entertaining endeavour that’s fresh, unique, and incredibly creative.
