Improv The Dead at the Camden Fringe is one of those shows that keeps it fresh and exciting every time you see it, due to its improvised nature. The troupe warm up the audience with a few mini-trailers based on audience suggested movie and tv show titles before delving into the main event, a zombie apocalypse themed movie based on location and theme suggestions by the audience.
Last night, we were treated to Flowers of the Dead, a florist’s quest to make it to the Arndale Centre in Stretford to join a community of survivors there. The improvised “film” is frequently paused to throw bonus features at the actors, requiring them to scramble to include random characters, new plotlines, and sudden surprise guest star appearances. A hilarious endeavour that keeps improv actors as well as the audience on their toes.
As far as improv troupes go, this one is absolutely on a professional level of shenanigans and side bars, it’s a delight to watch them quickly incorporate any suggestions sprung upon them while maintaining enthusiasm and a somewhat cohesive storyline. Adding in the brilliantly comical props, like sequined severed limbs and sparkling fabric guts coming out of tear-away shirts, there is no shortage of laughs to be had! The fake blood in the shape of red paper petals energetically splattered in moments of comic gore has the audience in stitches, while the ever-changing narrative delights and surprises.
An expertly crafted improv show that is delightfully funny and brilliantly unhinged. Don’t miss their child-friendly afternoon performance, and regular evening show at the Bridewell Theatre on 23rd August!
