The Globe ran another Shakespeare production specifically geared towards young people during the Easter holidays, this time they chose Macbeth, adapted into a tight 90 minute production that utilises modern movement and fast-paced action to make it more accessible as an introduction to Shakespeare.
With energetic dance elements, military clothing and updated weaponry, it’s a dynamic production that packs the entire action-laden plot into an easily digestible spectacle that appeals to children, young adults, and grown theatre lovers alike. Not omitting any of the important plot points, but wrapping them into the intense staging with minimal props and maximised enthusiasm, it’s a great way to get young people interested in the timeless classics. The cast is diverse and extremely professional, merging movement and acrobatics into the well-known characters with ease and passion. Projection of voices worked incredibly well in this production, noticeably more than last year’s Romeo and Juliet that struggled with quiet voices amongst louder ones.
I will definitely keep an eye on upcoming productions geared towards younger people, as Macbeth was fantastic. I even enjoyed being in the yard with a standing ticket again for the first time in years.
