Another 90s movie turned musical, Clueless is currently running at the Trafalgar Theatre until 14 June, but does it hold up to the beloved film?
The plot of Clueless needs no introduction, and the musical sticks incredibly close to the original film, both visually as well as plotwise. Especially costuming is extremely on point, taking the iconic outfits from the movie and only slightly updating them here and there. Stage design is very cleverly done, using very few set pieces to represent the different settings, from Cher’s posh, fashion-filled bedroom to a rich-kid high school in Beverly Hills. The set pieces that are used, are extremely cleverly designed, dynamic and whimsical to create the perfect setting with the help of colourful lighting and a few backdrop projections here and there.
The songs are more on the expositional side, explaining settings, motives, and plans, but they are pleasant enough in the first half, though the second act is definitely stronger, with much more solid bangers that kick the show up a notch! Keeping the cheesiness of the film, it’s a delightful little show that touches all the main plot points and keeps the characters very close to their screen counterparts of thirty years ago.
The biggest strong point of the production is the choreography throughout. Dancers fly across the stage with dynamic, contemporary, at times extremely funny, at others extremely impressive routines that dazzle and enthral.
While there is a confusing amount of multi-roleing, the cast is very strong! Emma Flynn embodies the role of Cher beautifully, playing up the naivety and immaturity of the character incredibly well while holding her own throughout the different singing styles throughout the musical. An absolute standout performance comes from Keelan McCauley as Josh, his vocals are just out of this world, impeccable timing and solid acting round out the character for a stunning performance. Chyna-Rose Frederick’s Dionne is dripping in personality and disdain, while Isaac J Lewis’ Christian is cheekily charming and absolute perfection for the role.
Revel in nostalgia with this dynamic production stuffed with incredible talent, Clueless is an instant winner!
