Count Dykula, currently on at the Soho Theatre until 1 March, is a musical comedy about the outcasts of society, friendship, and staying true to yourself.
Count Dykula, a traditional vampire living in the forest and preying on those who stray behind the big ASDA, struggles with the modern youth, who do not recognise her as something to be afraid of anymore. After all, vampires are sexy, high fem, and definitely sparkly. When she finds out about Scare University teaching monsters of all kinds how to be scary to a contemporary audience, she signs up to change her life-after-death. But she quickly realises that moulding monsters into a homogenous mass of easily palatable sex symbols is not what she wants from her haunting existence. With the help of a self-obsessed werepug, a thespian zombie, and a self-aware ghost, she leans into her masculine style and fights the human-normative university program.
The musical is a hilarious queer extravaganza of witty and very camp tropes clashing against modern media. Contemporary jokes and pop culture reference mingle with raunchy sidebars and silly songs. The cast of three hops from role to role with ease while delving into all the popular monster-tropes superimposed onto queer culture. Brilliantly presented and belly-achingly hilarious, this show is stupidly funny and funnily stupid all at once. Fantastic entertainment that begs to be seen!
