Posh Girls, currently running at the King’s Head Theatre until 2nd February, is a multi-layered play that keeps revealing glimpses into a friendship, and the lives of two young women.
Alexandra and Hermione were best friends at school, the closest of teenage friendships. But after a savage breakup, they haven’t seen each other in over a decade. Now, in the waiting room of their therapist, they have a chance meeting that starts very awkwardly and slides into a revealing journey through their lives.
At first, the two very different but equally posh women seem shallow, vapid, hilarious in their disconnectedness from the real world. But as the play delves deeper into their emotional lives, struggles with depression and addiction, volatile relationships, and the decade-long question of why their friendship imploded. Through a good dose of humour, the story reveals societal pressures, personal struggles, and the reminder that everyone has a world of their own problems to deal with.
The story is extremely well crafted, revealing itself through flash-backs between frantic chats on the waiting room sofa. A story of trauma and bullying, loss and abandonment, and how others see only a glimpse of one’s life. Posh Girls is an exploration of friendship and womanhood, prejudices and perceptions, a story that carries as much deep anguish as it does humour.
