Another new Christmas classic parody, Homo Alone is currently running in the Studio at The Other Palace until the 5th of January. This one’s a naughty parody, so leave the kids at home and enjoy this hilarious little musical that’s a perfect fit for the festive season.
It’s very closely based on the 90s classic film, except that Kevin is very tall for his age and everyone’s really flamboyantly gay. Interspersed with up-beat Christmas songs with amended lyrics, it’s a brilliant little parody that had the audience in stitches.
The campiness is dialled up to the max as Kevin realises that his Christmas wish left him all alone while two dazzling burglars attempt to gain access to the wealthy family’s home, as his poorly closeted father is gallivanting around gay Pari’ and his mother desperately tries to get back to her bebe – the absolute highlight of the show is Allie Dart playing Katy McCallister in the style of Moira Rose, which works incredibly well and is a beautifully funny delight!
The incredible high energy performance makes for joyous entertainment that is sure to become a Christmas classic. From the dazzling dance performances of Steph Asamoah, who pulls off a macho-bully teen boy just as effortlessly as a suave French flight attendant, to the hilariously innuendo-laden peeking-out-the-closet Peter McCallister played by Jack North with an energy that reminds of Ned Flanders in the best way.
A highly enjoyable parody musical that I would love to see transfer to a larger theatre next year, I’ll definitely be back to see it again!
