Dr. Strangelove is currently running at the Noel Coward Theatre until 25th January, and I cannot recommend getting a ticket highly enough!
Based on the 1964 Kubrick film of the same name, it’s an unhinged political satire, with a plot that feels astoundingly current and timely, considering how old the material is. The dark comedy follows a U.S. Air Force general who, in a fit of paranoia, initiates a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union without presidential authorization. As the U.S. government scrambles to recall the bombers, it’s revealed that the Soviets have a “Doomsday Machine” set to automatically destroy the world if attacked. Tensions rise in the War Room as military and political leaders, including the eccentric Dr. Strangelove, a former Nazi scientist, attempt to prevent global annihilation in a series of absurd and satirical manoeuvrers.
Visually, the stage design is very close to the aesthetic of the film, especially the War Room with it’s Big Board, circular table and overhead lighting installation. The dynamic set is swiftly rolled in and out of scenes, interspersed with clever projections and humorous interludes. The political parody, while based on the Cold War, is very fitting to today’s political climate as well, mostly unchanged with just a few contemporary references snuck in here and there. With brilliant comedic timing, words are weapons in this hilariously offensive comedy.
Beginning and ending with musical interludes, Dr. Strangelove is the must-see show of the season for me, unmissable rhetoric ballet mixed with surprisingly light-hearted war commentary and political discussions that could be taken from yesterday’s newspapers. An absolutely fantastic show!
