What (is) a Woman is a brand new play with music written and performed by Andrée Bernard recently staged at the Arcola Theatre in Dalston.
What (is) a Woman spans four decades, telling a woman’s story of love, laughter, and all the people who join in for the ride. It’s fresh off the presses and promises to take us on a wild, funny, and relatable journey that speaks to everyone, no matter their gender. This play talks straight to today’s audiences, capturing what it means to be a woman in an age of empowerment with writing that’s raw, real, and totally uncensored. Ultimately, it’s a story about being human through and through.
A very intimate and deeply personal performance, the play takes the audience through the development and growth of a woman trying to find herself and build her career in show business. It is touching, funny, sad, infuriating, exhilarating, relatable, and poignant, sweeping audiences along for the ride as we witness very personal moments and emotional struggles, triumph and fall in equal measure.
This new play is a beautiful exploration of what it means to be a woman in today’s society, and while there are a few difficult and perhaps controversial moments throughout the story, it is deeply touching and beautiful to watch.
