Cruel Intentions: The Musical is a stage adaptation of the cult classic 1999 film of the same name. The musical follows the manipulative and seductive schemes of wealthy and privileged teenagers in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Set in the late 1990s, the story centres around step-siblings Sebastian Valmont and Kathryn Merteuil, who make a bet with each other. Kathryn has been dumped by her boyfriend, and she wants to ruin his life for her own amusement, while she challenges Sebastian to seduce Annette Hargrove, an avowed virgin who is new to their elite prep school. Things take a turn when Sebastian develops genuine feelings for Annette, threatening to unravel Kathryn’s web of deception.

The jukebox musical features hits from the late 1990s and early 2000s, perfectly picked to bring some levity to the dark themes of betrayal and exploitation. With a lot of humour injected into the plot, it’s a brilliant example of a fun, light, easily digestible movie adaptation that smells of nostalgia while adding an edge that transports the plot into modern times.

This production is a fantastic reimagining of the film and highly entertaining.
