Another visit to the wonderful Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe Theatre. The Duchess of Malfi is a Jacobean revenge tragedy from the early 1600s. It is loosely based on the real tragedy of the duchess of Amalfi a century prior.

The play is a violent one, with tragedy and drama abounding. The Duchess is forbidden from remarrying after her husband dies, but going against the commands of her three brothers, she secretly marries her lowly steward Antonio. She bears him three children, keeping them and the marriage hidden away. But through the help of a spy, the brothers find out the truth and hunt her, her children, and her husband down to take revenge and cement their claim to their inheritance.

The story is full of intrigue and betrayal, intensely portrayed in this beautiful production. A harrowing tale told lovingly. The inclusive and fascinating casting the Globe continuously supports is a breath of fresh air in the theatre world, and works incredibly well for this profound production. Definitely not light entertainment, but if you enjoy devastating theatre, this one is definitely for you.
