The Homecoming, often lauded as one of Pinter’s masterpieces, is another reminder for me, that Pinter might just not be my bag at all. Whether it’s the writing style, the very carefully curated words and interactions that make the whole play feel artificial and stilted, or just the outdated setting and themes, it all feels like an over-engineered glimpse at lives that never existed.

This is not to say that the acting performances were bad, quite the opposite, the entire cast was fantastic and really leaned into their characters. It’s just that Pinter’s writing style often feels too rigid and artificial, not human enough, for me to fully believe the characters or scenarios presented.

There’s definitely still an audience for these outdated, exaggerated plays, I’m just not part of that audience so really didn’t enjoy this show at all. It seemed to drag on forever and the interactions got more excruciatingly laboured and artificial.
