A Christmas Carol

Another year, another A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic. If you know me, you know that this is my favourite Christmas story, and a new tradition for me to see as many Christmas Carol stage adaptations in December as I can fit around my schedule.

This production is the same it was last year, but this time round Christopher Eccleston stars as Scrooge himself. And what a treat it was to see this version of the show.

I absolutely love the subtle changes to the original script, and of course the immersive elements that involve the audience in a fun and engaging way. The stage and costume design are the same beautiful designs we saw in this production before, and I am so happy they kept it the same as I really love the look and feel of it. It’s a very emotional and touching version of the story that really comes to life in this production.

Eccleston did a fantastic job as Scrooge, running the gamut from absolute humbugging grump, over broken man clinging to hope, all the way to delightedly happy Ebeneezer jumping with joy. What a wonderful performance and a real privilege to have been able to witness it from on-stage seats.

If you only see one Christmas Carol this year, make it this one! It is well worth your money.
