Oh What A Lovely War is playing at the Southwark Playhouse until 9 December. It’s a mix of musical, circus, and war documentary.
A revival of the 1963 production, the show is styled like an old-timey cabaret circus, packed with satire, comedy, and tragedy, it leads through the happenings and statistics of the first world war. While the performers, in a mix of pierrot-inspired and military uniform costumes, get up to hijinx, busting out songs like It’s A Long Way To Tipperary, devastating statistics of the real human losses of the war are projected onto the backdrop. As the show moves through funny and energetic musical numbers, it gets more emotional and dark as the story progresses.
A beautiful production with a brilliant cast that really gets into character, it’s entertaining and educational all at once. An old production barely updated for this revival, due to its timelessness.
