Frank & Percy is everything I hoped it would be and more!

It’s rare to see queer romance stories done well, even rarer to see them revolve around older people, but this show does it incredibly well without punching the drama bag too much.

Ian McKellen and Roger Allam are absolutely fantastic in this play, in which Frank and Percy, one a divorced academic, the other a widowed school teacher, meet in the park while walking their dogs. Talking regularly during their dog walks, they first forge a friendship, then a blossoming romance.

The two characters are incredibly well crafted, fully drawing up well rounded and believable people. Seeing them navigate a plethora of mundane, every-day situations from first dates in small cafes to first fights over differing opinions, all the way to attending their first Pride together, it’s such a breath of fresh air to see mature, queer stories told well.

Of course there’s tension and surprise, but there’s also tenderness and so much humour. Presented with charm and patience, Frank & Percy is a fantastic new play that was an absolute pleasure to watch on stage!
