Accidental Death of an Anarchist is the funniest play I’ve seen this year, which was unexpected for a political satire piece of sorts.

The play is based on the case of an Italian railway worker being accused of several bombings with no evidence whatsoever. During the harrowing interrogation, he fell from a fourth floor window to his death. The big question being, was he pushed or did he jump?

The story is led by The Maniac, a man repeatedly insisting he is certifiably insane, slipping into a number of disguises to fool the police into thinking he is conducting a new investigation into the incident.

Breaking the fourth wall repeatedly, The Maniac leads through the story with wit, charm, and a hefty dose of chaos, interacting with the audience while manipulating the other characters in the story. The pure pandemonium of his actions make the darker plot a lot easier to digest, there are so many laugh-out-loud moments despite the seriousness of police violence allegations.

The strength with which Daniel Rigby fully leans into the mad energy of The Maniac character is the highlight of this play, no doubt. Embodying pure chaos with a smile, whirling across the stage while captivating the audience completely, it’s a joy to watch.

An incredibly energetic and hilarious play, this new adaptation is not to be missed!
