Around The World In 80 Days is one of those stories that really stuck with me from my childhood. I was fascinated by the idea of travelling all over the world, encountering so many obstacles, and meeting interesting people along the way. So when I got invited to see a theatre/circus production of this well loved story, I knew I had to attend!

Tilted Wig Productions is touring this show around the UK this year, to mark the 150th anniversary of the English publication of Jules Verne’s novel. But they bring it with a twist! Not only do they tell the fictional story of Phileas Fogg, they’re also adding the very real story of Nellie Bly, who replicated the journey around the world in only 72 days, 6 hours, and 11 minutes in 1890. The young journalist fought hard to be able to be the first woman to circumnavigate the globe in this manner to prove that it was possible in less that the 80 days it took Fogg to do the same. She had to convince her bosses at the paper, who thought it ridiculous that a woman would even attempt this, and the entire world. But she succeeded, and this production pops facts about her feats into the storyline by exploring how the real-world traveller fared in comparison with the very much fictional Fogg.

Lovingly presented in an exuberant circus show with lots of fun and pomp, it’s the perfect family show to enjoy this summer!
