Another trip to the cosy Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe Theatre, this time to see the new production of Titus Andronicus, possibly the goriest of all Shakespeare plays.

This all-women production takes on the deadly tragedy without the usual gore, and with a surprising amount of humour. Each actor takes to the stage with a candle representing their life, and as each of the characters gets killed or mutilated, the candles take the brunt of the force. There’s no fake blood to be seen, but rather than making the play less intense, the waxy mayhem serves to bring a different edge to the plot.

Brilliantly intense, the cutting, mashing, stomping, and chopping of candles serves as a fantastic stand-in for the bloody violence, drawing the focus on the human tragedies behind the story, rather than the carnage and slaughter.

Humour is cleverly woven within the production, bringing some levity to the dark and intense narrative, with some more modern references, while staying close to the original script.

A fantastic show-case of how these classic plays can be presented in a different light, with sparkling wit for modern audiences.
