I got a surprise invite to the Dirty Dancing gala night at the Dominion theatre. And what a night of bright pink excitement it was!
Not only did they have a pink carpet and photo-op wall set up, the auditorium was also completely buzzing with an atmosphere of exhilaration and anticipation. It’s always a great feeling when an auditorium is filled to bursting with eager theatre goers.
I’m not going to waste your time with an overview of the plot, as Dirty Dancing is such a piece of cult media, even those who haven’t seen it will have a good grasp of what it actually is.
The show itself was bright and exuberant, with absolutely stunning dance skills that completely blew me away. And while the songs themselves were at times not very memorable (apart from the big, well known hits of course), the performances stood out with strong voices and passionate singing. Together with the high energy dance routines, it’s a stunner of a show that refuses to quit even during quieter moments.
The only niggle I have are the at times extremely dodgy accents, but I can look past that in favour of the buzzing voice talent and the mind-blowing dance moves.
While romance-themed shows aren’t usually my thing, I thoroughly enjoyed this one, surprising myself with how much I got into it throughout the show. A great piece of entertainment!
