On Thursday I watched another instalment of the In Camera series of the Old Vic , this time a live streamed performance of The Lorax. It is the 50th anniversary of the first publication of this well known Dr. Seuss story, so the Old Vic put on a fun little staged version for audiences of all ages.
Considering the story was written 50 years ago, it’s uncomfortably contemporary in its message of preserving resources and not letting greed destroy the world. With gorgeous puppets and props, this scaled back version is so well done and a delight to watch. Some of the scenes with the Once-ler seem like a strange dream world, almost delirious and vaguely threatening, which fits the character so well. At the same time, the scenes with the Lorax are a lot more grounded and slower.
I really enjoyed this dichotomy. The lighting and stage design worked fantastically for this scaled back production. The whole thing is such a joy to watch. Only on until tonight, you have to hurry if you want to catch it!
