Being in lockdown due to the corona virus pandemic, I thought I’d use the time to work on my backlog of shows I never got around to review back when I actually saw them. I just don’t always have the time to write reviews right away and sometimes they just fall into an eternal backlog that I am now striving to work through! I actually viewed this production on 21 December 2018 and am writing the review with my theatre notes written during and after the performance.
Ah, I had been wanting to see the Seussical for years! So I was glad to finally snag tickets for the most recent production at the Southwark Playhouse. I love Seuss stories, silly as they may be.
The Seussical takes characters and plots from a variety of Seuss books, mostly from Horton Hears A Who, and smashes them together in a musical romp.
The plot isn’t very deep of course, this is Seuss-territory after all, but it’s absolutely colourful, entertaining, and so much fun. There’s a good selection of the most popular Seuss characters, some very charming and funny songs, and a few weird plotlines thrown in.
I very much enjoyed this wild ride, despite the story not making too much sense. There’s so much colour and joy in this musical, I’ll definitely go see it again.
