As part of one of the amazing Merkat Tours walking tours, we got to skip the line at Edinburgh Castle and were treated to a short tour. After that, I grabbed an audio guide (absolutely worth the money!) and struck out on my own.

The castle sits strategically on top of a hill, so the views from the battlements are absolutely astounding. You can see all of Edinburgh from up there while walking on paths filled with history.

From the Scottish crown jewels to the tiny bedroom in which Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to James, who was later crowned King of England and Scots, this grand castle is full of historic little scenes and beautiful buildings and halls.

The military barracks are still in use and there are many exhibits on military and war histories as well as the old POW cells, the audio guide definitely provides a plethora of information and directions.

The castle was an absolute delight on my visit and is not to be missed when you head up to Edinburgh!
